Computing Competencies for Philosophy Majors

  Submitted 10/20/00

The Philosophy Department believes that the four basic competencies covered by Introduction to College Life - word processing, using email, navigating within a network environment, and using on- and off-campus databases -are sufficient for philosophy majors.

Below are the competencies, accompanied by an account of how philosophy majors will use them in the major.

1. Word processing

Student work must be submitted in typed format. Some courses may require student work to be submitted electronically, in which case word processing would be required.

2. Using e-mail

Students are encouraged, but not required, to use e-mail as one way of communicating with faculty. Some courses may require students to submit work electronically via email.

3. Navigating within a network environment

In the future, Philosophy Department courses will have accompanying web pages from which students can access copies of the syllabus, other course materials, web-based resources and interactive educational experiences. Such access may be required.

4. Using on- and off-campus databases

Students in select upper-level courses and honors students may be required to access articles

using databases.
