Computer FAQ’s
Information regarding the Center for Information Technology and its operations can be found in AMOS under Administrative Systems, Center for Information Technology.

Do I need to bring a computer?
Moravian College maintains public computer labs on both campuses to make both Windows-based and Macintosh computers available. Before bringing a computer on campus, you may want to wait to assess your situation. You will have a much better understanding about your computing needs after being on campus for a few months. If you already have a computer, the dorm rooms have network connections to provide access to the Internet and Moravian’s network. Your computer will need an Ethernet network interface card and cable to connect to the network. If you are not sure if your computer has a network card, speak to the computer vendor. Network cables are available in the book store. There is no wireless access in the dorms.

Is there a discount purchase plan for buying a computer?
Apple, Dell, Lenovo (formerly IBM) and MPC (formerly Gateway) provide an educational discount to Moravian College students. Participation in these programs is at the discretion of the student and the purchase contract is between the student and the manufacturer.

Should I buy a Laptop or a Desktop?
Laptop - Advantages
- Easy to transport to and from school. - Takes up little dorm space or desk space. - Can be carried to class or library for note-taking, study, etc. - Have built-in wireless networking ability. - Can be brought home during weekend or holiday visits. - Can be shipped to manufacturer or taken to dealer for service.
Laptop - Disadvantages
- Much more easily stolen, particularly if carried around campus. - More easily dropped or broken. - Somewhat more prone to failure than desktop computers of comparable quality. - Significantly more expensive for comparable speed & capacity. - Limited expansion and add-on capabilities.
Desktop - Advantages
- Best value: typically, more speed, memory, and storage for a lower price. - Relatively difficult to steal. - Lower probability of failure for comparable quality machine vs. notebook. - Relatively easy to expand or modify as needs change. - Less costly expansion products such as large hard drives & additional memory. - Flat screen LCD monitors are now reasonably priced, reducing desk space requirements and making storage/shipping easier.
Desktop - Disadvantages
- Space-consuming and awkward to move to and from school. - Takes up valuable real estate in cramped dorm rooms. - Can't be carried to library or classes. - Difficult to ship if repair/replacement is needed.

What kind of computer should I buy?
Students bring either Macintosh or Windows-based computers to campus. There are no specific recommendations. Your academic major may dictate what type of computer may best fit your needs.

What resources should I have on my computer?
Here are the minimum recommended requirements:
Windows: Pentium IV 2 GHz or higher
Macintosh: G4/G5 Intel-core Duo - 2 GB or higher
80 GB Hard Disk or larger
32 MB Video RAM or higher
CD-RW/DVD-RW combo drive (for additional backup purposes)
Sound Card and Speakers
Universal Serial Bus (USB) port(s)

What software will I need?
Operating Systems: Windows XP Home/Professional/Vista.
Macintosh OS X version 10.5 or higher
A suite of applications which includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database and presentation software is recommended, preferably Microsoft Office.
We do not support systems running Linux or other versions of UNIX.

What about virus protection?
Virus protection software is required and must be up-to-date. Moravian offers Kaspersky antivirus for your Windows computer and McAfee's Virus Scan 8.6 for Macintosh computers. After you connect to the Moravian Network, login to AMOS and go to Administrative Systems, Center for Information Technology and select Computer Support. Virus protection is the sole responsibility of the student. Keeping the virus definitions current and keeping computers free of viruses are maintenance procedures that students are responsible to perform themselves. Please note: CIT will block access to the Internet for those student computers that either have not applied recent Microsoft Windows OS patches or Macintosh Updates or do not have the virus scanning engine up-to-date with the latest virus definition file.

What are the policies for virus removal from student computers?
Computer viruses are a continually growing area of concern for our computer-driven world in which we live. Virus protection, as stated earlier, is the sole responsibility of the user. Keeping virus definitions up-to-date is one of the standard operating procedures the responsible user performs, along with subsequent scanning of hard drives. Moravian has purchased a licensing agreement with Kaspersky for PC and Virus Scan for Macintosh software, including all updates. Use of this software is extended at no charge to all Moravian students for their Windows or Macintosh computers. You may have another virus scanning software application currently employed on your computer, which possibly was installed by the manufacturer. This software may be an equivalent substitute, but must be kept up-to-date as well. Often the original manufacture of the computer has placed a time-limited version of the virus protection software on the computer, which eventually will lead to a requirement to pay for the renewal of the license. Please be aware that Moravian provides the Kaspersky and McAfee products at no charge for initial installation or updates. You may wish to consider moving to this product for virus protection, once the lifespan of the original virus scanning software runs its course.

How do I connect my computer to the network?
Printed instructions for connecting to the network can be found on AMOS, Administrative Systems, Center for Information Technology or at the Help Desk located in Memorial Hall Rom 102. Please note there are different handouts for different operating systems.

What happens if I can’t get my computer connected?
Please contact the Help Desk at x7929 or stop by Memorial Hall, room 102. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 8:00am-9:00pm and Fri. 8:00am-4:30pm

Do I get a network account and email address?
Yes, all students get a network logon and email address. Through the campus network, you will have full Internet privileges, an email account, personal file space, and space for a personal Web page, laser printing and access to course-related software. You can access the network from your personal computer in your dorm room or from any lab or classroom computer connected to the network, as well as access to your data via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) when off-campus.

Where do I pick up the network account information?
Students will receive their logon letters at May or July registration.

Where can I get my computer repaired or serviced during the semester? Certainly, the first call regarding a repair to your computer would be directly with the manufacturer, if the unit is under warranty. Users are expected to backup hard drive data before repairs are done, as data may be lost during the repair work. Service cannot be performed in residence areas and delivery service is not available. The Help Desk in Memorial Hall will assist with cleaning up viruses and network issues.

Do I need a printer?
It is convenient to have a printer in your residence; however there are printers available for use in the computer labs and the library.

Email: 25 MB
File server: 150 MB
Web site: 25 MB
Printing quota: $35 per year / some majors have additional printing fees

Can on-line games be played?
Gaming is available, but sluggish performance and increased lag time can occur due to the priority given to academic resources first.

Is file sharing allowed?
Any act of file sharing that violates copyright laws is prohibited by the college. The college will cooperate with proper authorities if an inquiry is made into a user’s activities. File sharing has its uses, if restricted to public domain materials and materials for which a user possesses a license.

Blackboard

Blackboard is a Web-based course-management system designed to allow students and faculty to participate in classes delivered online or use online materials and activities to complement face-to-face teaching. Blackboard enables instructors to provide students with course materials, discussion boards, virtual chat, online quizzes, an academic resource center, and more. The degree to which Blackboard is used in a course varies. For example, instructors may supplement an on-campus class by putting their syllabus and handouts on their course sites. In contrast, other courses may be conducted entirely through Blackboard, without any on-campus sessions. If you’re enrolled in a course that uses Blackboard, be sure to find out how Blackboard will be used in that course.

Printing

Moravian College has instituted printing quoatas for all students, faculty and staff.

Printing charges will be $.05/page for black and  white and $.50/page for color.
With the exception of Art students, all students will begin each academic year with a printing balance of $35.

This equates to 700 pages of black and white; or 400 pages of black and white and 30 pages of color; or 200 pages of black and white and 50 pages of color; or any combination that adds up to $35/academic year.

Wireless Access

Currently wireless coverage is available in and around Reeves Library, Priscilla Payne Hurd Academic Complex, the Haupert Union Building, Collier Hall of Science and the Bahnson Center (Seminary). On the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus (South Campus) access is available in Clewell Dining Hall, the Music Library, Music Student Lounge, and Main Hall Computer Lab. Additionally, the four new multimedia classrooms Comenius 111, Comenius 309, Comenius 411 & Zinzendorf 103 also have wireless available. Due to the nature of wireless signals, we are not able to guarantee the areas which have coverage. We have however focus on the public areas/lounges of the buildings specified. Throughout the semester we will continue to work on adding coverage to select locations. Again because of the nature of radio signals, there are likely areas adjacent to those mentioned that may also have significant wireless coverage.
