A reminder that…
- It is against the law to download music without paying for
it. It is also against the law to permit others to use your computer
or other Internet device to download music without paying for
it.
- It is against Moravian College’s Acceptable Use Policy
to download music without paying for it. The Center for Information
Technology does not monitor content of network traffic, but it
does monitor traffic patterns. If these patterns indicate Acceptable
Use Policy violations, CIT will investigate and confront those
violators. You can re-read Moravian College’s Acceptable
Use Policy at http://home.moravian.edu/public/cit/_policies/aup.pdf
- It is unethical to download music without paying for it.
- It is risky to illegally copy music. The Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA) is aggressively pursuing Internet
music file swappers. Copyright laws protect all performance-based
media, such as songs and movies, are protected under copyright
laws, even if it is not specifically stated that they are protected.
That means that you can not legally copy them or share them out
without express permission to you from the performer.
- Moravian College Internet bandwidth restricts music and other
file-sharing programs. As a result, music file sharing is very
slow and programs such as KaZaA does not work very well and may
crash your computer.
- RIAA will use tactics such as honey pots, which are Internet
sites that invite you to illegally download copyrighted songs.
RIAA will record your Internet address and downloaded music and
then sue you for huge damages.
- In compliance with the law, if RIAA or law enforcement agencies
contact Moravian College and ask to identify the IP address of
those who are illegally sharing or downloading files, Moravian
College will comply with the law and disclose the names.
- You may legally download music…
- If it is not copyrighted (assume it is copyrighted, unless
it expressly states it is not)
- If you have express permission from the copyright holder to
you personally to download.
- If it falls under “fair use”; for academics or
research, temporarily, in limited quantities.
When you download music, you will do so very slowly.
