Senior Vice President, Chief Underwriting Officer, Commercial Lines
Selective Insurance Company of America
After graduating from Moravian College in June 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management with minors in Mathematics and Physics, Brian began his career with Selective Insurance as a corporate trainee. Many people change companies to continually have new challenges during their career, but the Selective trainee role would turn out to be the first position of twelve that Brian would hold during the next 20+ years with the company. The seven-month training program was a great start and provided exposure to the many facets of property and casualty insurance, ranging from actuarial to safety management to marketing. Upon completion of the program, Brian began his career as an underwriter working on public entity business in Selective’s Allentown, PA office.
A few years later, Brian began underwriting in the field, working as an agency management specialist for Selective in northeastern Pennsylvania. This allowed Brian to secure valuable experience working alongside independent agents to select and serve Selective’s customers. He achieved profitable growth in his territory, appointed new agents and successfully drove his territory’s profit and loss for Selective.
In February 1998, Brian was promoted to vice president and accepted a position leading the Community and Public Services Strategic Business Unit (SBU) in the company’s headquarters in northern NJ. Over the next fifteen years, Brian would have the opportunity to work on a number of company acquisitions and subsequent integrations, to lead Selective’s large account operation, be named president of one of its subsidiary companies, as well as run the Contractors SBU and oversee the commercial lines of business and product development operation. In January of 2013, Brian was promoted to senior vice president, chief underwriting officer, Commercial Lines.
Graduating from Lehigh University in 1997 with his Master’s in Business Administration, Brian furthered his industry education by earning his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) and Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designations.
