Field Placement Lesson Plan
1. Course Title: English 3
2. Unit: Short Stories
3. Grade Level: 11
4.General Objective: After reading "A&P," students are going to organize a mock talk show in order to gain a clear understanding of characterization.
5. Performance Objectives:
1. Students will be able to define characterization and tell the difference between a static and dynamic character.
2. Students will develop their own interpretation of the characters of the story.
3. In-groups students are going to write a character analysis for the people in the talk show.
4. Groups will also develop at least three questions to ask each character on the panel.
5. Students will organize and put on a mock talk show. They will write a brief commentary on it.
6.Rationale: This is a lesson that helps students to learn the contents of characterization, and it is fun. Doing a talk show is something that they can relate to. The group work is a form of cooperative learning and will help students socialize in a meaningful way. They will also write a commentary on how they felt about the show.
7. Instructional procedures:
1. I will begin the lesson with a brief mini-lesson on characterization. I will define characterization as the method the author uses to reveal or describe characters and their various personalities.
2.I will teach the difference between a static and dynamic character. I will put the definition for each on the board and give examples of both.
A. Rose from Titanic was dynamic B. Bugs Bunny is static.
3.Tell the students that we are going to read "A&P" and that I want them to pay particular attention to the characterization.
4. Read the story aloud calling on volunteers. (I find that with this group, reading aloud in the best way to go. Other wise they would not read it.)
5. Announce that we are going to put on a mock talk show. Ask volunteers to play the nine characters I thought of:
A. Sammy
B. His parents
C. Mr. Lengal
D. Stoksie
E. the three girls
F. the cash register watcher
6. Discuss each of the characters and their role in the story. This will be brief, but I want to give them a head start before they work in groups.
7. Divide the students into nine groups, one for each character. There will be three people to a group, each consisting of a character and two audience members.
8. Instruct them to write a character analysis of the character in their group so the talk show host can introduce them. They also have to come up with at least three questions to ask that character.
9. After all of the analysis are finished we will talk about the order of the show.
10. Have the show.
11. Have a brief discussion to wrap things up and assign them to write a commentary on the activity. In the commentary, they will have to tell me who their favorite character was and if they were static or dynamic.
8.Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the questions and character analysis designed for the show, and in the commentary they write.
