Inductive Lesson / Discussion on the Speech of Explanation
By Matty
OBJECTIVES
- To observe a sample "Show and Tell Speech."
- To reflect on the sample "Show and Tell Speech."
- To discuss presentation, techniques, and general observations on public speaking
- To brainstorm individual speech topics.
RATIONALE
The sophomore students at a mid-sized school in Pennsylvania are required to give three speeches by the end of the school year. This particular speech design, the "Show and Tell" speech, has 4 major criteria: 1) the student will teach members of his or her class how to do something uncomplicated 2) the student will explain something important to him or her by using an object to help him or her to explain a larger concept, experience, or phenomenon 3) the object can be almost anything--a photo, book, work of art, sports equipment, tool, something technical 4) this speech focuses on the important skill of explanation. In this lesson, I will try to stimulate and maintain students' interest in the introductory class to public speaking by using the advice of Carol Weinstein, author of Secondary Classroom Management, in her chapter "Managing Recitations and Discussions." In this lesson, I will use novelty and audiovisual equipment. Then, through critiques and discussion, I will engage students by "mak[ing] room for personal knowledge and experience" (Secondary Classroom Management 211).
