Dr.
Mayer completed his undergraduate degree at the University
of Cincinnati, his masters degree at Xavier University,
and his Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University.
Dr. Mayer coordinates the secondary education program
and supervises secondary student teachers. He taught
social studies for twelve years before coming to
Moravian. He teaches courses on the historical and
philosophical foundations of education and on reflective
methods for secondary teachers and social studies
teachers. He has published his research in Teaching
Education and Teaching Education Quarterly, and has
presented papers at conferences of the American Educational
Research Association, the Pennsylvania Educational
Research Association, and the Middle States Council
of the Social Studies. His current research focuses
on effective social studies teaching. Dr. Mayer's
writing for young people include upcoming articles
in Cobblestone, a magazine of history, and a high
school text to be published by Greenhaven Press in
spring of 2004 entitled The Civil Rights Act
of 1964.
