RESEARCH INTERESTS

Book:
German Body Culture
The study, Beyond the Gymnasium. Educating the Middle-Class Bodies in Classical Germany, 1770-1870, charts the rise of the German Bildungsbürgertum. I argue that the formation of this class was not predominantly based upon its academic prestige but on its everyday life, on its concern with the body.

Research Project:
Transformations of Honor in Germany, 1700-1945

For the next project, I explore, through a series of case studies, how the sense of honor changed in Germany during the formative centuries of German culture and how these changes shaped German political and social landscape. I have started to develop the foundations of this project during my visits to the Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel in 1997 and 1998 and to Max-Planck-Institut für Geschichtswissenschaft in Göttingen in 1999.
