Assistant Professor of Biology
Biological Sciences Department
Full-time tenure track, beginning Fall Term 2010
The Department of Biological Sciences at Moravian College http://home.moravian.edu/public/bio/index.html invites applications for a tenure track ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position beginning Fall 2010. Applicants must have their Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment.
We are looking for an animal biologist whose expertise complements that of current members of the department. Areas of particular interest include evolutionary biology and development, but all appropriate areas will be considered.
Moravian College is a selective liberal arts and science college in the beautiful Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania with 18 academic departments and 120 full-time faculty. It typically enrolls 1550 students in its regular session and another 500 in the evening division. Founded in 1742, it is the sixth oldest college in the country. Moravian's proximity to New York and Philadelphia presents unusual opportunities for professional and cultural enrichment. Moravian College values diversity and encourages individuals from under-represented populations to apply.
Success as a faculty member at Moravian is evaluated on the basis of teaching, scholarship, and service. Applicants who provide strong evidence pointing to their ability to flourish in a small liberal-arts-college environment will be seriously considered.
Teaching is paramount at Moravian. Each semester, faculty in the sciences typically teach two lecture courses (3 hours each per week) and two or three laboratory sections (3 hours each per week). Evidence of successful undergraduate teaching will greatly strengthen a candidate's application; such evidence may take the form of descriptions in letters from faculty who have observed the candidate's teaching, letters from former students, or summaries of student course evaluations.
The new faculty hire will be responsible for teaching:
* A 100-level course in anatomy and physiology for nursing majors (BIO103 and BIO104)
* A portion of the introductory sequence for biology majors (the format and structure of this sequence is currently being discussed, and may be launched in Fall 2010)
* A 200-level course in animal biology
* A 300-level course in the area of the applicant's specialty
Scholarship at Moravian is evaluated in many ways, but carrying out research with undergraduates is critical. In addition to opportunities for students to participate in independent research projects under faculty supervision as part of their coursework (BIO381-4 Independent Study), Moravian has two programs for such research: SOAR http://www.soar.moravian.edu and Honors http://www.honors.moravian.edu The candidate's research statement should explicitly address how undergraduates will be able to participate in the applicant's research program.
Moravian is a member of LVAIC (the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges); this is a consortium of 6 colleges all located in the Lehigh Valley, and consists of Cedar Crest College, DeSales University, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, Moravian College, and Muhlenberg College. The proximity of so many institutions of higher education offers numerous research collaboration possibilities. Startup funding is available for this position.
Service to the institution takes a variety of forms, including committee participation and student advising. Any service activities will be assigned with consideration of current teaching and scholarship responsibilities. We are looking for scholars and teachers who will actively contribute to the broader life at Moravian.
Applicants should provide a curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, a statement of research interests, copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and three letters of reference. Materials may be sent as hard copy or (preferably) electronic files (.pdf or Word formats). Completed applications should be addressed to:
