Monthly eNewsletter - April 2013A Year of Sustainability | April is Earth Matters Month The end of the 2012-13 academic year is fast approaching, so it seems appropriate to reflect a bit on our year-long focus on sustainability and the wide range of related activities that have occurred throughout the year. We have had some excellent speakers including Dr. Sandra Steingraber (author of the common reading Living Downstream), Winona LaDuke (fall Convocation), Dr. Bridgette Brawner (2012 Sipple Lecture) and Dr. Julian Agyeman (2013 MLK lecture). Two more talks will be held in early April, both with appropriate themes for sustainability and our annual Earth Matters celebration. |

Common Reading: Living DownstreamThis year’s common reading is Living Downstream by Sandra Steingraber, in which the ecologist author investigates the links between cancer and environmental toxins. She strengthens the case for banning poisons that pervade our air, our food and our bodies. She says that saving the planet becomes a matter of saving ourselves and an issue of human rights. The documentary film about the book will be shown in the fall as part of the IN FOCUS film series. |
