About IN FOCUS
Introduction
IN FOCUS is an exciting new academic initiative making its debut during the 2010-11 academic year. Moravian College, Moravian Theological Seminary, and Moravian College Comenius Center will be introducing the use of a common theme in its academic, as well as co-curricular, programming. Faculty, students, and staff will study and discuss a key issue of current interest over the course of the academic year. The required reading for first-year students will have a direct link to the year’s programming theme. The new Fall Convocation will reflect the theme as well as many other classes, lectures, and happenings on campus. Those who are responsible for planning academic events (lectures, exhibitions, performances, student activities, etc.) are encouraged, although certainly not required, to build upon the common programming theme.
Special thanks to the IN FOCUS Committee and to the campus community of Moravian College, Moravian Theological Seminary, and Moravian College Comenius Center for its support of and participation in this new initiative.
Goals
-
To promote a more actively engaged learning community on campus
-
To model for our students the process of understanding a complex issue or question, developing an informed position on that issue or question, and communicating that position in an articulate and respectful manner, both verbally and in writing
-
To provide opportunities for the entire campus (faculty, staff and students) to learn more about an important comtemporary issue, reinforcing our values of lifelong learning and strengthening community
About CHINA | IN FOCUS
The theme for the 2010-11 academic year is the role of China in the 21st century. How will China use its economic power on the world stage? What are the opportunities and challenges facing modern China? What is the appropriate U.S. response to China’s evolving role in the 21st century?
In order to more clearly discern China's political and economic future within the global community, we will also explore Chinese culture. What are their values? What is their history as it will influence the future? What can we learn about the Chinese people through study of their culture and artistic expression?
