Saxophone, CLASSICAL - specific audition requirements

Scales

  • All major scales up to 5 sharps and 4 flats, 2 octaves (G, A, and Ab 1 octave)

Sightreading

  • Expect something at the high school level.

Two Prepared Pieces

  • Two contrasting pieces or movements from a multi-movement work (one slow, the other fast). One of the pieces may be an etude from 48 Famous Studies by W. Ferling. Other good examples are listed below:
    • Alto saxophone
      • Creston - Sonata for Eb Alto Saxophone
      • Handel - Sonata No. 3
      • B. Heiden - Sonata
      • E. Bozza - Improvisation
    • Tenor saxophone
      • L. Ostransky - Contest Caprice
      • P. D'Rivera - Vals Venezolano and Contradanza
      • H. Villa-Lobos - Fantasia for Soprano or Tenor Saxophone
    • Baritone saxophone
      • Bach - Suite No. 1 (cello)
