Dr. Roslyn Weiss, Clara H. Stewardson Professor of Philosophy, Lehigh University

ABSTRACT: I argue that justice in the Republic is defined in Book I and is an interpersonal, social, virtue, and not in Book IV where what is called
justice is wholly internal to the soul and is actually moderation.

Justice in Republic I

Roslyn Weiss is the Clara H. Stewardson Professor of Philosophy at LehighUniversityin Bethlehem, PA.She earned her doctorate in philosophy from Columbia University in 1982 and a Master's degree in Jewish Studies from Baltimore Hebrew University in 1992. Her fields of expertise are Ancient Greek Philosophy and Medieval Jewish Philosophy. She has published four books on Plato, most recently, Philosophers in the ‘Republic’: Plato’s Two Paradigms (Cornell University Press, 2012), and more than 40 scholarly articles on Greek and Jewish philosophy. She has lectured widely in the United States, as well as in Canada, England, Israel, Belgium, Germany, Greece, and Japan.

Submission Guidelines

Please send submissions as attachment in .doc format. You may send an abstract or complete paper. A complete paper should be no longer than 2,500 words. Submissions may be on any philosophical topic and should be prepared for blind review and include a cover page with the following information:

  • Author’s name
  • Title of paper
  • Institutional affiliation
  • Contact information (email, phone number, mailing address)
  • Word count
  • Area of philosophical subject (ex. Ethics, Existentialism, Metaphysics)
  • An abstract of no more than 200 words
