My last communication to you was to acknowledge Dr. Thomforde’s impending retirement at the conclusion of this academic year. The Board, of course, now has a priority to hire the best next president for Moravian College. To do that, we are inviting members of the Moravian community to serve on a broadly representative search committee whose members will be revealed when we have gained agreement from all. I continue to be grateful for the Rev. David Bennett’s agreement to chair the search committee.

We have partnered with Greenwood/Asher and Associates, an executive search firm specializing in higher education, to facilitate the search for our next president. The Greenwood/Asher team includes the firm’s principal, Dr. Kathy Martin, and executive search consultant, Chris Channing.

Our goal is to be able to have the search process concluded by the close of the calendar year. To meet that schedule, we are anxious to get the search underway. Kathy Martin and Chris Channing will be with us in Bethlehem on September 6 to meet with the search committee and to host “listening sessions” with Moravian community constituents to learn more about us and what we’re looking for in our next president. We will share more with you very soon about the schedule for those sessions.

At this early stage of the search, many of you likely have questions about the process and the timeline. There are many details that are still being worked out; but, we recognize the importance of regular communication about the search. I will provide more information regarding schedule, process and search members at the colloquium on August 23. Another resource and communications vehicle will be the soon-to-be launched presidential search website that you can consult to keep abreast of progress.

As with any major initiative, it is sometimes helpful to “begin with the end in mind.” We know there is great interest about what the final stages of the search process will look like. Our intent is to have an open process where the final candidates are invited to campus to participate in a series of meetings, including open forum sessions where you can interact with them and hear about their background, experiences and perspectives on Moravian College. That was the process we used when President Thomforde was selected. The board is mindful, however, of the significant ways presidential searches have changed. It is possible that we will have qualified candidates who would prefer to maintain confidentiality. As I stated, the board is committed to hiring the best next president and will consider a more confidential process, if necessary.
