As a result of an extended period of graduate education, wide reading, and careful thinking, they develop expertise on a subject. This expertise will be on some aspect of a discipline. For example, a historian might become quite knowledgeable about peasant revolts in the Middle Ages. Such people become thoroughly familiar with the primary documents on the topic and with the work of people who have produced secondary sources, books and articles, on it.
