I work for the Colonial Intermediate Unit, the local organization for students with disabilities. I am a substitute associate teacher through the regular school year and work for the ESY (Extended School Year) program over the summer. I have worked with a wide variety of disabilities along with a big range of age groups. It is an absolutely amazing program to work for and I have learned a lot from experience. Through this program, I have been able to work with a wide variety of technology based material designed for students with disabilities.
I worked at East Hills Middle School for a semester and had a fantastic experience with a group of 8th grade students in a Learning Support classroom. I was able to tutor 1-3 students over the course of the semester and help them in their struggle areas. I observed the classroom management skills and techniques through a math, science, social studies, and a language arts class. Towards the end of the semester I was able to teach two lessons to my students and it went absolutely amazing and I had a lot of fun with the students.
I worked at Nitschmann Middle School for a semester with a 6th grade English Language Arts class. Through this I was able to observe the classroom structure and learn how to work with a younger group of students. I helped the students with their work as well as monitored their behavior. Also in this experience I was able to work one on one with a student with Asperger's Syndrome. Again, I had a very challenging, but excellent experience that is helping me with my future goals.
I worked at Freedom High School for a semester in an ELL/ESL classroom. I worked with high school students ranging from grades 9-12. I got the opportunity to work with a student with autism one on one. It was a very challenging, but wonderful experience. I worked with the students mainly with literature, spelling, and grammar. Sometimes there was a challenge because of the language barrier, but getting through it while teaching my students was a huge success!
