Substitute Teaching

I entered into the teaching profession as a substitute teacher for several school in Warren County, New Jersey. My first day I was led into an unfamiliar classroom and giving the responsibility of directing the education of a second grade class. From there I went on to teach various subjects such as Science, Math, and Social studies to classes from first grade through eighth. My substitue teaching experience taught me how to think on my feet and to be ready for anything that might occur in the elementary and middle school classroom.

Field Experience at Moravian College

My first experience working alongside a seasoned teacher was with Mr. Micheal Sames in his third grade classroom at Fountain Hill Elementary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The time that I spent in Mr. Sames' classroom gave me the opportunity to not only observe the practice of teaching, but also to put into practice the skills and techniques which I had learned in my education classes. During my time in that classroom, I worked with centers, directed reading groups, and provided extra support for children who were struggling with the lessons. by the end of my time there, I had established a connection with the students, and I was sorry to have to leave them.
In the fall of 2007, I began my field experience in Mrs. Amy Vogler's Kindergarten class at Spring Garden Elementary School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Working with the Kindergarteners proved to be very different from anything that i had ever experienced before. They required much more attention to help guide them and keep them on track than the third graders that I had worked with in my previous experience. However, they also possessed an excitement for everyday activites that seemed to fade as students progressed through the levels of elementary school. While in the classroom, I worked with the students on theit "Kid writing" journals, led the "Morning meeting" where the children reviewed the weather, calendar and alphabet, and taught lessons to the children. My favorite apsect of this experience was the extent of imagination and creativity that the students possessed while completing their lessons. My goal for my teaching is to cultivate that creativity in whatever grade level I am teaching.

Volunteer Work

Mosser Elementary School
Since 2006, I have been been involved in Mosser Elementary's annual celebration, where I instructed groups of children about various historical concepts.

2006 - I donned a piratical persona and taugh the children about the lives of pirates. Each child was given a job on the pirate ship, and the group learned about what each person did on a daily basis. I explained how pirates lived, what they ate, and what their music might sound like.

2007 - I dressed in armor and taught the children about knights and chivalry, regaling them with tales of knighthood and Arthurian legend. I explained to the children the importance of a knight's heraldry and gave them the oppurtunity to design their own personal heraldry that they could take with them and share with their friends and parents.
