Text:

None will be required. Teacher handouts, use of her personal library, internet and library research and guest speakers will be included throughout the length of the course.

Description:

This course will be designed to demonstrate and develop art instruction across multiple curricular domains. It will focus on aligning instruction to both art and academic state and national standards. The topics will include effective models of art instruction, the development of curriculum and lesson planning, classroom organization and management, technology resources and assessments. Students will also become familiar with Field Visitations, Professional Development Issues, and related Pre-Service Protocol. This course is writing intensive. Inside and outside of class work is expected.

Goals:

Students will:

·        Relate studio experience to units of art and academic study

·        Practice appropriate art pedagogy within the classroom

·        Record, evaluate and learn from field observations

·        Become aware of appropriate responses to various challenges

·        Create art lesson across multiple curricular domains that will be used during their student teaching experience

Requirements and Grading Criteria

·        Each student will be required to keep a three-ring binder of developed, researched arts integrated lessons that are aligned to state art and academic standards. These lessons will be developed across multiple curricular domains and will follow the suggested format given by the instructor. AT LEAST one fully developed lesson PER GRADE LEVEL will be required (13 ) and if time permits, I would desire that additional lessons be added to your collection. The more you have to pick from, the easier your life will be when student teaching. SPEND THIS TIME IN DEVELOPMENT AND DO IT WISELY.

·        A reflective teaching journal of your experiences during this course will be required. Entries will be made after each classroom observation in the field, as well as after guest presenter visitations in our classroom setting. A final reflection paper taken from this journal will be due the last week of class. More discussion on this requirement will be done in class.

·        Each student will be required to have fully developed examples for each of their lesson plans. Examples showing process development and /or finished possibilities. These examples may be created in various formats such as: self made, computer generated, photocopied etc. These examples and lessons are age appropriate in design.

·        Each student will present one of their personal fully developed lessons to the entire class grouping. Times will be assigned in class. Upon completion of this presentation, there will be class critiques for evaluation and improvement purposes. All students will be expected to participate. These lessons may then be added to everyone’s lesson plan binder, but will not count toward the personal final 13 lessons created. It is suggested that this sharing be done via the internet as attachments.

·        The developed lesson plan binder, the presentation, and class participation and overall attitude will be looked at very carefully when determining final grades. The developed binder will be checked periodically over the course of the semester. A student/instructor conference will be held for troubleshooting and feedback purposes if necessary. Neatness and professionalism count. Students are strongly advised that the quality of preparation and presentation of materials is taken into account in the grading of all assignments.

·        The field pre-student teaching experience and all that it involves (as outlined in the Moravian College handbook developed for this) is a course requirement. At our first class meeting, all of this will be explained and distributed by Education Department personal.

·        Required readings and research from various sources completed when assigned. Written quizzes may be given to check for this.

·        Students must attend class. Unexcused absences and lateness will adversely affect grades. Come prepared to learn and share acquired knowledge. Together as a Team We Will All Achieve More!

·        Participation is an important part of my class. As the success of the class and the amount of knowledge you take away from it depends on your involvement, you will be graded on your participation. Quality participation includes such behaviors as willingness to encounter studio and critical inquires with a degree of openness, consistent attendance, obvious preparation for class, asking pertinent questions and offering relevant remarks, and engaging in constructive dialogues.

·        Students should familiarize themselves with the Moravian College Academic Honesty Policy, as stated in the student handbook.

·        This syllabus is subject to change and notice will be shared with students in a timely manner if it does.
