At temperatures near freezing, on nights that are clear and calm, radiation heat loss can cause the temperature of unharvested fruit to freeze and frost to form on the fruit.  To keep the temperature of fruit above the freezing point, several techniques can be used.


Fans above tree-top level can be used to circulate the
air in the orchard.
Central California.


Orchard heaters (also called smudge pots)
can provide heat and create mixing of the air.

Water can be sprayed on the plants.  In this picture,
