ICBM Rocket Silo

A Historic Vestage of the Cold War

Located about 30 miles south of Tucson, AZ, this Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) hardened-site is located almost entirely underground. It has been decommissioned, made permanently inactive, and converted into a museum. Shown above ground, this rocket nose cone was designed to protect the launched atomic bombs upon their reentry into the earth's atmosphere over the target.

We descend the stairs into the very secure facility.

A rocket at the "ready."

We descend deeper.

As the sign implies, two people are required to launch the rocket.

The entire subsurface facility is suspended on springs to absorb the shock of a surpise near-by nuclear explosion.

More shock-absorbing structures in the underground.
