THE PROGRAM LEADING TO TEACHER CERTIFICATION
IN BIOLOGY (Grades 7-12)

The purpose of the Moravian College program leading to the Instructional I certificate in Biology (grades 7 through 12) is to create a learning experience that provides a balanced liberal education background, assures competency in basic principles of learning, and requires a student to develop an expertise in the field of biology.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR BIOLOGY CERTIFICATION
€ The professional education courses required for biology certification include:
Education 150, Education in American Culture. (Suggested for the sophomore year.)
Education 155, Educational Psychology. (Suggested for the sophomore year.)
Education 240.2, Computer Technology in the Classroom. (Suggested for the sophomore year.)
Education 242.2, Including Special Students in the Regular Classroom (Suggested for the sophomore year.)
Education 260, Reflective Teaching. (Suggested for the fall of the junior year.)
Education 364, Curriculum and Instruction in Science. (Suggested for the fall of the senior year. There is a required day-time field experience associated with this course.)
Physical Education 236, Health and Safety Education. (Suggested for the junior year.)
Education 375-7, Secondary Student Teaching. (Spring of the senior year.)
Education 378, Seminar in Secondary Student Teaching. (Spring of the senior year.)

€ The prospective student teacher must fill out and submit an application for admission to student teaching (obtained through the Education Department) no later than the fall term of the junior year. Specific criteria for admission to student teaching are attached to the application. Under normal circumstances, a student can expect to be admitted to the program if he/she is of good character, has demonstrated a strong motivation to teach, and has an overall grade point average of 3.0 together with a 3.0 average in the major and in the professional education courses. These averages must be maintained once the prospective student teacher has been admitted to the program.

€ Most students at Moravian College are required to fulfill the liberal education guidelines of the core curriculum. Exceptions are listed in the catalog under the topics "Individually Designed Majors," and "Add Venture programs."

€ Post-baccalaureate students seeking a teaching certificate must have completed the major requirements listed below with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and must have earned an overall grade point average of 3.0. Students who do not meet these criteria will be required to repeat major courses sufficient to achieve these minimums. Any courses required in Moravian's major which were not completed at the undergraduate institution must be taken at Moravian College. The post-baccalaureate candidate must submit at least two letters of recommendation from past instructors and/or employers, and must successfully complete the Core Battery sub tests of the Praxis Exam (General Knowledge and Communications Skills) prior to registration for student teaching.

€ The prospective student teacher is required to register for Education 375, 376, 377, (Secondary Student Teaching) and Education 378 (Secondary Seminar) in the spring term of his or her senior year. These courses constitute the student teaching experience. Students are advised not to take any other courses during the student teaching term.

THE BIOLOGY MAJOR
Students must complete the following selection of courses in the sciences or science-related areas:
Chemistry (4 courses)
Chemistry 113, General Chemistry
Chemistry 114, General Chemistry
Chemistry 211, Organic Chemistry
Chemistry 212, Organic Chemistry
Biology (5 courses listed below plus 4 electives)
Biology 112, General Zoology
Biology 119, Introductory Biology
Biology 200, Genetics
Biology 265, Cell Physiology
Biology 370, Biology Seminar
Biology Electives (4 courses)
Four (4) other Biology courses must be selected by the student in consultation
with the adviser. Biology 230, Field Botany, and Biology 225, Invertebrate
Zoology, are strongly recommended as electives.
Mathematics (1 course from those listed below)
Math 170, Analytic Geometry and Calculus , OR
Math 106 and Math 166, Analytic Geometry & Calculus I with Review.
Math 107, Elementary Statistics, OR
Elective
The program provides for 1 elective. Students should endeavor to use this elective to broaden their science background with a course appropriate to their interests and previous training. Physics is most strongly recommended as an elective. (Note that calculus is needed as a prerequisite or co-requisite for the Physics 111 and 112 courses but there is no college math requirement for the Physics 109 and 110 courses.)
PRE-STUDENT TEACHING EXPERIENCES
Several courses in the professional education sequence require day-time field experiences. ED 150, Education in American Culture, and ED 155, Educational Psychology, require that you complete 40 hours as a teaching assistant in a public or private secondary school over the semester . ED 364, Curriculum and Instruction in Science, requires a more substantial field experience. These will be arranged by your course instructors in cooperation with the Education Department's Field Coordinator. Candidates who are not able to complete these experiences will be required to complete a May Term Field Study prior to acceptance into student teaching.
The prospective student teacher is also encouraged to become involved with the instructional program at Moravian College. This may involve working with equipment and/or materials within a science area, helping to instruct a beginning laboratory class in some aspect of science, grading some portions of laboratory reports or homework, etc. These activities will permit the prospective teacher to view a variety aspects of the educational process within a science discipline.
PRAXIS EXAM
All students seeking certification in Pennsylvania are required to complete the Praxis Exam. This program includes a Core Battery (Communication Skills, General Knowledge), Principles of Teaching and Learning (7-12), and the Biology Specialization Tests. The Core Battery must be successfully completed prior to registration for student teaching. The remaining tests should be taken before the student teaching semester.
