The electronics for the sound-activated strobe were built by Lee Knauss.  Note the speaker for sound pick-up to the right of the balloon and the light from the strobe on the far right side of the photograph.  The time delay can be controlled by changing the distance between the speaker and the object making the sound, which in this picture is the "pop" of the balloon when the compressed air rapidly exits the balloon interior just after the skin of the balloon was violated by the pin.  Click here to see the setup used to obtain these stop-action photographs.
